5 Causes Of Low Back Pain Surgery CAN'T Fix

Updated: May 3, 2022

Have you heard this sad story?

A friend or family member goes under the knife to have back surgery in hopes of living pain free only to be left with...

  1. The same pain as before surgery AND

  2. Side effects and complications from surgery.

I've heard this same story WAY too many time in my practice as a PT.

The research shows that spinal surgery is only moderately effective for reducing low back pain. In fact, many orthopedic surgeries have been compared to fake surgery and shown to be NO better.

Check this video out if you don't believe me. This stuff blows my mind.

So why are millions American's flocking to have spinal surgery?

A big part of the problem is the reductionist view our medical system treats low back pain (and many other chronic conditions). We mistakenly believe that low back pain is directly caused by damaged tissue in our spine or compressed bones pressing on nerves.

Doctor to patient: "The MRI shows you have disc degeneration from L3-L5, Mr. patient. That's why your back hurts."

Patient to doctor: "What can I do for that?"

Doctor: "The only fix is a costly surgery that may not work."

Degenerative discs in the spine are very similar to grey hair with age. Everyone gets grey at some point. But that doesn't mean you can't live a healthy and active life. Research shows that a high percentage of folks develop degenerative changes in the spine with age and don't have pain.

George Clooney was nominated “sexiest man alive” after receiving his first greys.

Although I can't promise to make you sexiest man or woman alive, I can help you with your back pain. Without surgery. Without pills. Without injections.

Before going under the knife in attempt to solve your pain problem, consider that there are many pathways to decreasing pain which are arguably more effective than surgery AND that surgery cannot fix.

1. Bad diet

It's well researched that people with chronic back pain have higher levels of inflammation. We also know that the American diet is full of pro-inflammatory fats, sugars, grains, and toxic additives.

Cleaning up your diet is hard work. Especially when fast food and packaged food makes it so easy to fill our bodies with hyper-palatable junk.

But for someone with chronic low back pain, the alternative to eating radically different is going under the knife and dealing with the probable side effects of surgery.

Eating healthy is hard. The consequences of surgery and following modern medicine's advice is hard. Choose your hard.

So, here are 3 things to remove from your diet and three things to add in.

❌Toxic seed oils (Corn, Canola, Cottonseed, Soy, Sunflower, Safflower)

❌Sugar (even natural sugars)

❌Grains like bread, pasta, and oatmeal

Add in more...

✅Vegetables 🍅 🍆 🥒

✅Well-sourced animal products 🥩 🧀 🐖

✅Probiotic-rich, nutrient dense, gut-boosting items like kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt, and pickles.

2. Crappy sleep hygiene 🛌 😴 💤

Lack of sleep and poor quality sleep have been linked to everything from back pain to balding.

So before you go to sleep under general anesthesia for back surgery, do everything in your power to optimize your nightly sleep.

Here are 3 simple tips that will give you best the chance of a restful night of Z's.

Cut screens an hour before bed

You've heard all about the evils of blue light and the stimulation of the wake fullness centers of your brains so I won't belabor them here. Kill the Netflix, phone or work emails at least an hour before bed. Get a paperback book, talk to your significant other or kids, or do some gentle yoga.

Sleep and wake at the same time

Kids thrive with consistency. Consistent rules and rhythms. We adults are not different. Our bodies function best on a consistent rhythm. If you go to bed and wake up at relatively the same time every day, you'll balance the release of hormones your body needs to be sleepy when it's time to sleep and energized when it's time to be awake.

Sleep in a cool, dark room

Humans are meant to sleep at night. Night time is typically cold and very dark. It's only in the last few hundred years that we've been able to create artificial lights at nighttime. And it's taking a toll on our sleep. So shut off all the lights, get an alarm clock that can be dimmed fully, and buy yourself some blackout curtains.

3. Poor Alignment

What happens to the tires on your car if your wheel alignment is off?

They wear faster.

Although the human body is much more complex than a car, the principle remains the same. If shoddy breathing and tight muscles are pulling your body into compromised positions, you're much more likely to have low back pain.

Here's a quick check to see if your body is aligned:

4. Decreased core strength

"What core exercises are best for decreasing back pain?" is one of the most common questions we get from patients here at Village.

It's a valid question. The core muscles provide stability and security for the lower back joints, discs, and nerves. Pain is our body's response to a lack of safety and security.

We went deep on all things core strength HERE.

5. Lack of OVERALL body strength 💪

Beyond the core, you have hundreds of muscles throughout your body which can all be connected in some degree to the health and function of your lower back.

The stronger you get, the more secure and stable your body will be and the less likely you'll be to have back pain.

To get as strong as possible in the least amount of time possible, use full body exercises which recruit every cell in your body like...
